First of all, I heart The Black Keys. Brothers is probably my favorite album of the year so far.
Date: July 28th, 2010
Time: 9:00 AM
Place: Terminal 5
I took maybe 2 pictures with my cell phone and a couple seconds of video, but I didn't want to be "that guy." All in all, the concert was awesome. Performed great, sounded incredible, totally rocked out... but thats not how the night started.
Probably around 5:30 I leave work, it was on a Wednesday unfortunately, and head out to Bourbon St Bar and Grill at 46th St between 8th and 9th ave. I walked in the bar by myself while I waited for my friend Brian to arrive. While by myself I always feel weird, if I order a drink will the bartender think I'm a drunk or are people looking at me like a loser for being solo. Blah. Brian arrives, and we start to destroy the Happy Hour drink menu. We take down in order: Spiked Arnold Palmer, Margarita, and a Mint Julep. My girl arrives half way through our first stop.
We walk to 48th and 8th ave to a place called Social Bar. I start with a bourbon and coke, the lady gets a sprite and vodka, and Brian wraps it up with a gin and tonic. I wasn't sure if the waitress is hot, she is kind of on the cusp. She definitely is ditsy, in fact I am sure she thought Brian was a pretentious prick because he laughed in her face at how slow she was... but seriously how hard is it to understand an order? Way too much food is ordered, we scarf down mozzarella sticks and hot wings. We get seconds on the drinks, and Johan Santana gives up 6 runs in the 1st inning. As we decide to leave me and Brian chug a gin and tonic together, through straws.
Take another little stroll down to 50th and 10th ave down to 1-2-3 Burger Shot Beer. This place is always so packed and so cheesy. Watered down drinks here for sure, we don't mind we need a break so we take orange tic tac shots, red headed sluts, Magic Hat #9, Bud Lights, and Jaegermeister shots.
Time for the show, we are pretty nice at this point. Joanna leaves, and we head out to the show. Finally. Terminal 5 is an awesome venue, a couple of "floors" that can see straight down to the performance area. We pretty much skipped the opening acts, chilled at the rooftop while he smoked cigarettes. Drank more beers, got me a t-shirt for $25... I consider it a deal because the poster was selling for $30 lol. It sounds so much better live, its a different sound and you can just feel it.
I was too drunk and into the show to actually write anything down or articulate what I remember. Just know that it was worth it and if you like The Black Keys, come with me to the next show and have a just as fun night.
The night wasn't over for me, I knew if I went home I wouldn't be able to wake up and make it to work. Brian couldn't hang so I went on a solo mission. Hit some random dive bars by myself while ordering some beers until they closed. Then hit up a diner and booked it to work (first time I was over a hour early) and conversed with the doorman at my jobs building. Horrific experience, I know I'm older because I used to break night like nobodies business. I was passing out every 30 seconds.
Well it has been nice to post after such a long time. Sorry it was more about my night than the actual concert, but isn't that how it should be? You should make the night, not the concert making you enjoy yourself. Of course it doesn't hurt to see a great show. (Cliche enough?)
Cheers.
